

Edward Carlton Johnson died peacefully at home on Thursday morning. Carl, affectionately known to many as “Carlie,” was born August 17, 1927 in Live Oak, Florida. In 1930, his family moved to Pompano Beach where his grandparents had been living since 1900 as one of the pioneer families involved in farming. He was raised primarily by his aunt and uncle, Loucene and Sylvester Fox (Broward County Commissioner from 1935-1953). Carl graduated from Pompano Beach High School in 1945 and served in the US Navy at the end of WWII. He graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Entomology. He was an active member of Sigma Nu fraternity. Carl worked for a couple years with the Wilson Toomer Fertilizer Company. He then began a 60 year successful career as a realtor in the late 1950’s, Johnson & Callaway Realty, and served as a commissioner on the Florida Real Estate Commission. He was married to Janet K. Drum, mother of his four children, from 1956 to 1984. He was a man of deep faith, and in his younger years was active in the Lay Witness Mission of the Methodist Church. He was also a 33rd Degree Freemason of the Scottish Rite. He had a passion for hunting and loved watching sporting events on television. He was an avid fan of the Florida Gators all his life. Carl was a loving father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle and true and faithful friend to many. He is survived by his four children- Lynn J. Lagod, Jeffrey, James, and Michael; son-in-law; Tim Lagod, daughter-in laws; Teresa Johnson and Laurie Johnson, six grandchildren; Jake Lagod, Francesca Johnson, Samuel Lagod, Alexa Johnson, Beau Johnson and Ford Johnson; several nieces and nephews and his companion Mary Richards. He is predeceased by his brother, John Bill Johnson, sister, Mary Virginia Blythe and bother, Oscar Kelly Johnson. There will be a visitation at Kraeer Funeral Home in Pompano Beach on Tuesday May 19th from 5:00-7:00PM and the funeral service will take place at the chapel of the Methodist church in Pompano, 210 NE 2nd st, Wednesday May 20 at 2:00.
