November 17, 1928 – February 5, 2022
Obituary of Fred Steinhardt
IN THE CARE OF

Kraeer Funeral Home & Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens

Fred Steinhardt passed peacefully with his family at his side on February 5, 2022. Born on November 17, 1928 in Manheim, Germany, he grew up in New Hyde Park, New York, and graduated from Oneonta State Teachers’ College, now SUNY Oneonta. During college he met his beloved wife Barbara and they were married on Easter Sunday, March 25, 1951; they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary before Barbara predeceased him in 2017. Barbara and Fred were parents to John (wife Mary) and Claudia (husband Eric). They were blessed with two granddaughters, Megan (husband Nathan) and Linda, and a grandson, Ian (wife Melody). Fred had three great-grandchildren, Eli, Bennett, and Emma Zacharias.

A gifted teacher, Fred was well-known for his even-tempered disposition and extraordinary intellect. Among his interests was volunteering at Bonnet House for more than 18 years. He and Barbara were world travelers, visiting London every year for more than 30 years, and touring places including China, Japan, all 50 states, the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, the Virgin Islands, and most European countries. He enjoyed chess, bridge, golf, and swimming, and was a wonderful husband and father. He was loved by all, and everyone appreciated his calm and humble spirit.

Per Fred's wishes, services will be private.
