FISHER, Gerald, 96, of Pompano Beach, FL, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2016. Born on April 23, 1920, Jerry was a Great Depression survivor with a true sense of adventure. After he completed his service in World War II, he returned to New York where he enjoyed riding his motor cycle and opened and operated his own service station.
Never liking cold temperatures, Jerry began to visit Florida in the 1950’s. In love with the water and mild temperatures, he made a permanent move in the mid1950’s. Another reason for this move, he had met the lovely Josephine Palumbo, whom he began to court. They married in 1961 and settled in the small town of Pompano Beach where they had two children, Cheryl and Mark.
Jerry decided to maximize on the up and coming industry of air conditioning. He began as an apprentice and spent the remainder of his career in this industry until his retirement at the age of 62.
Jerry enjoyed a long retirement of spending the majority of the year in Pompano Beach and the summers and part of the fall in his beloved Adirondack Mountains, on the Sacandaga Reservoir. He also welcomed his grandchildren, Danielle, Michael, Amanda and Tommy. His family was able to visit him in the mountains summer after summer for many years. They enjoyed many boating trips and campfires with their Pop Pop and Grandpa.
Even when Jerry’s health began to decline and travel to the mountains was not possible, he was known to stay current on events, surfing the net into his early 90’s and always willing to give his opinion and advice on anything that needed to be fixed. He was the original McGyver. There was nothing broken, that he couldn’t fix. Heaven just received the best mechanic ever known.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016, 1:30pm at Christ Community Church, 901 East McNab Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33060.
