Gregory S. Conely Sr.

January 3, 1953April 4, 2019

Gregory S. Conely, Sr. (spiritually known as Brother Conely) was born on January 3, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Greg grew up in “the hood” (as he would say) of Cleveland, and was proud of it. He often said that the Lord and life’s experiences made him tough and made him into the individual that framed his being. His living brothers, Harold Conely (Sybil) and Michael Tareyton Conely loved and respected their older brother. He had a great resemblance to his deceased father, Johnnie Burl Conely, Sr. Greg’s deceased siblings Mary Murphy (sister), Johnnie “Jakie” Burl Conely, Jr. (brother), and, Christopher Conely (brother), as well as his deceased mother, (Maggie T. Watt), were all eulogized by Greg. They realized the love he had for God and the strength that he had to endure such a task. Gregory was blessed to be able to mesh together, so profoundly, his faith in God with his sense of humor. He touched many lives as a member of the Church of Christ since July 11, 1971. Greg was the first generation of his family to graduate from college (Ohio State University – BS in Social Work), and received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity at Midwestern Christian Institute.

Brother Conely served as a minister of the Churches of Christ for over 40 years at the following congregations, Adams Avenue Church of Christ, Cleveland, OH, Watkins Rd. Church of Christ, Columbus, OH and East Chestnut Church of Christ, Ft. Wayne, IN.

He also served in prison ministries and as a chaplain, but he found much joy in the conversations of individual seekers (one on one). Greg was a personal worker for the Lord. He professes that Christ is the best thing that ever happened to him in his Life; and, the 2nd best thing was marrying Kathy Conely, and staying together for 44 years. She was the love of his life. He leaves to mourn, his beautiful, spiritual wife, Kathy Conely, 5 children – Ebony Conely (Perry), Gregory S. Conely, Jr. (Rochelle), John S. Conely (Crystal), Margaret Lee (Andy), and Destiny Conely (Fiancée – Ekow). In addition, 11 grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Greg departed this life to spend eternity with his everlasting and eternal God on April 4, 2019.

We request that all flowers be sent to 390 NW 15th St., Pompano Beach, FL 33064 on Thursday, April 11th, from 10am-5pm.

To Sister Conely and Family,
I cried when I heard the news of Bro Conelys passing. He was a humble, passionate, compassionate, man with a big smile and a big heart. Above all he was a proud crusader for Christ. Through him, my self as well as many others were able to see a glimpse of God. As he let his light shine, we could see God's love, his grace and as some would say, his sense of humor. I am so thankful to have been under his spiritual leadership and to have had the privilege of spending time with your family. Thank you all for your example of a loving Christian family.  I have so many fond memories: He was the first person to let me drive on the highway.

I quickly found peace in knowing that Bro Conely fought a good fight and kept the faith. Bro Conely was loved by many and he will truly be missed yet we know that to be absent from this life is to be present with the Lord. Yes Eb, that is BLESSED ASSURANCE. May God continue to bless and comfort each of you. Love you all. ~Benita

Uncle Greg, you have touched my life and the lives of so many others. You have been a blessing. Your dedication to your family, your example as a parent and the work you did to enrich the lives and spirituality of others are an inspiration. I will miss your jokes and funny stories and seeing you at our family gatherings. I feel so blessed to have known you and that my children also had a chance to know you. It was a privilege to have you as my uncle.

So sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to the entire Conely family. I only had the pleasure of meeting him a couple times, but when I did he was a wonderful man. He will be missed by many.

The Richards, Strickland and Lane family would like to give our condolences to the family. Brother Conley use to be our minister at the Watkins Road church of Christ in Columbus Ohio. It was a great pleasure being lead by a great man and his family was awesome too. Brother Conley was a straight shooter, he did not hold any punches, he taught the word, truthfully far as we saw in him, he was a God fearing man, he stood up for what was right, that is why I said he was a straight up shooter, my family loved him and his family, we had a lot of fun at Watkin Road with them. He was caring, understanding, humble and his wife was the same. Too us him and his wife lived by the word, he had a good sense of humor. We hated to see them leave Watkins Road, they were dearly miss. You guys are in our prayers. Love you and still miss you guys.

Oh Daddy, we love you and miss you. I keep thinking about that big, infectious smile, with that cute dimple you passed on to so many of your kids and grandkids. I want you to know that your life mattered. You made a difference. Destiny and I can’t keep up with all the phone calls and well-wishers explaining how much of an impact you made in their lives. Thank you for instilling your five chilluns (as you would say) with the values of faith, community, service and humility. I can only imagine how much deeper your divine interceptions will be, now that you are seated in the rose garden of the Almighty. We love you.

There are so many wonderful things I could say about Bro. Conely; his encouraging spirit, huge smile, and the amazing LOVE he had for Christ, his wife and family. Bro. Conely is certainly missed, but his legacy is evident in the tremendous impact he had on so many people. My fervent prayers are with the Conely family. Blessings.
