

John M. Cooney, 56, of Fort Lauderdale passed away Saturday morning April 9, 2016. Born October 20, 1959 in Hartford Connecticut, a graduate of Enfield High School, Boston College and Suffolk Law School; he was a highly regarded litigation attorney whose bar admissions included the U.S. Supreme Court.
John was cherished by his family and many friends for his grace, genuine kindness, marvelous intellect, spontaneity and a humor and wit befitting an Irishman. His composure and determination to enjoy life endured throughout his long battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his mother Agnes (McSweeney).
He is survived by his longtime partner Julio Fernandez and their daughter Heather (Jon) Smith, granddaughter Avery, father Frederick Cooney, stepmother Ann (Moneta), brother Michael (Jeanette) Cooney, nieces Mary (Eric) Magnuson, Susannah Leniger, and Elizabeth Cooney, nephews Fred Cooney and John Cooney. He was also close to many other members of his extended family which included 40 first cousins.
Visitation will be at Forest Lawn North Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 200 W. Copans Rd., Pompano Beach, FL this Wednesday from 6 PM to 9 PM, and on Thursday from 9 AM to 11 AM immediately followed by a service and interment on the property.
