John Peter Katonah, born August 2, 1933, was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, and a man who lived a life filled with family, adventure, curiosity, and cherished memories.
The son of Dorothy Deibel Katonah and John Katonah, John graduated from Queens College with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later earned his Master of Business Administration from Adelphi University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in France following World War II. His time in the Army gave him many stories to tell, and he especially enjoyed sharing memories of Paris with his family, who never tired of hearing them.
John and his family spent more than twenty years in Garden City, New York, where he and his wife raised their two daughters, Karen and Joyce. His family was always at the heart of his life, and the memories created during those years remained special to him throughout his life.
John built a career as an accountant, working for several companies in New York City before later joining the Internal Revenue Service in Florida. He and his wife, Mia, resided in Pompano Beach, Florida. There, John embraced retirement with the same sense of curiosity and adventure that had always been a part of him. He loved living near the ocean, took flying lessons, enjoyed painting, and looked forward to traveling on cruises with Mia. He continued to find joy in discovering new experiences and sharing them with the people he loved.
John was preceded in death by his brother, George Katonah, and his sister, Vera Katonah.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Mia Frasco Katonah; his daughters, Karen Katonah (Mark A. Anthony) and Joyce Katonah Kreis (Steven Kreis); his grandchildren, Larissa Anthony, Amy Kreis Allison (Taylor Allison), Scott Kreis (Haley Williams Kreis), and Heidi Kreis Berger (Noah Berger); and his great-grandchildren, Zoe Allison and Callan Allison.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His family will remember him not only for the life he lived, but for the stories he told, the adventures he shared, his love of learning and discovery, and the countless memories he created with those closest to him. His legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and through the love and memories they will carry with them always.
