Joseph Daryel Newton (JD) was born July 18, 1923 in Moultrie, Georgia. He grew up in a home with three brothers (three othersiblings were already grown.) Daryel, as he was called growing up, answered Uncle Sam’s call at 19, during WWII, joining the army. He had one brother in the Air Force and another in the Army. Their youngest brother eventually joined and was killed in action. Daryel trained, then left for North Africa, Italy (where he sang in a military choir), France, then Germany. After returning home, he attended college, studying Mechanial Engineering. In 1950 he married Jean Lovett Free of Doerun, GA. He was hired by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Marietta, GA, where he loyally worked for 35 years, earning many accolades before retiring in 1988. Daryel and Jean had three daughters, Ginger and twins Nancy (deceased) and Betty.
In the 1960’s, a friend shared the Gospel of Jesus with them. Jean ccepted the free gift of eternal life right away, but, Daryel had to ‘take some time’ (engineer’s analysis). Soon, he too accepted the gift mof salvation. The family joined Westminster Presbyterian Church, a Bible teaching church. He began a life of serving the Lord in church. He was a deacon, elder, Sunday School superintendent, sang in the choir, and taught Boys’ Brigade, touching many lives. He and Jean also opened their home for Bible Study to neighbors and church members. He loved his wife, his family, extended family and his Lord – and loved to share with others about the Lord in EE! They joined First Baptist Church of Atlanta where he also served in several capacities. He loved to sing , joining their choir, participating every year in the Passion Play. It was during this time they opened their home to their granddaughter who lived with them until graduation.
Daryel and Jean moved to South Florida in 2006, joining CRPC, then joining New Presbyterian Church in 2010. He loved coming to church every Sunday and was always in “good shape for the shape he was in!”
He is survived by his wife, Jean of 66 years, his daughters Ginger (Fred) and Betty; grandchildren Derek Loomis (Michelle), Nancy Newton, Darby Loomis and Galen Loomis; and great grand children Gavin, Destineigh, Zoe, Mason, Marena, Mia and Jonah. “Papa” will be missed by his family and by all who knew him.
