Joyce Ann Horton Bass died at her condominium in Margate, Florida, on July 3, 2018, at the age of 66. Joyce was born in Miami, Florida, in 1952, to Paul Francis Horton and Dolores Young Horton. Joyce was a sixth-generation Floridian. Joyce grew up in Pompano Beach, Florida, and graduated from Pompano Beach Senior High in 1970.
Joyce loved her family, and she loved the cats she had over the years. Joyce was a kind, witty, fun, gentle, generous, and loving soul, and she put serving others above her own needs.
Joyce loved her work at Ramblewood Middle School, and she loved the children with whom she worked. She was a Certified Classroom Assistant for the Broward County public schools, having begun as a Teacher Aide in February 1978. After working at a series of four elementary schools, Joyce began working at Ramblewood Middle School in September 1983. She remained there for 35 years, and she made many friends among her co-workers.
Joyce was preceded in death by her mother; her father; her stepmother, Peggy Porterfield Horton; and her sister Karen M. Horton. Joyce is survived by her sisters Kathy Horton-Brown (Ted Brown), of Pensacola, Florida, Andrea Horton Monaco (Tony), of Parker, Colorado, and Christina Horton Morris (Sean), of Parker, Colorado; her brothers Richard P. Horton, of Hollywood, Florida, and Paul Frazier Horton (Karla), of Sebring, Florida; and Karen Rounds, life partner of Karen M. Horton, of Townsend, Tennessee.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at St. Martin Episcopal Church, 140 S.E. 28th Avenue, Pompano Beach, Florida, with Father Bernard J. Pecaro officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Martin Episcopal Church.
