Bardzo, bardzo dawno temu kolegowalem sie z Piotrkiem.
Byl moim starszym kolega.Ze wzgledy na niego poszedlem do takiej a nie innej szkoly sredniej. Poszedlem tam za nim.Niestety nie bylem w stanie dorównac mu kroku i w któryms momencie nasze drogi rozeszly sie. Zawsze byl w moich myslach bo byl wyjatkowo pogodnym czlowiekiem. Teraz rozumiem ze po prostu nie zasluzylem na jego przyjazn.Ale teraz kiedy odszedl spróbuje byc choc troche, taki jak on.

I can remember bringing my son Kyle to Pompano Beach. You were always there to get the handicapped wheelchair for him. You made sure Kyle was comfortable and I had everything I need. When we were done for the day, you made sure you were there to wash the wheelchair down, so I wouldn't have to do it. I don't think I ever let you know how much that meant to me. I assumed you'd always be there. Thank you, Pete.

This morning I was scheduled to swim my 500-Meter water test. Twice a year, lifeguards on Fort Lauderdale beach are required to swim this distance, in under 10 minutes, to keep spot on the patrol. This would be my 57th swim test since 1986.

 Out of curiosity, I looked down the list of guards that had already swam this test earlier this and last week, to see what their times were. Piotr Zatorski's name jumped out at me, with an 8:43 next to it. Then I started thinking how I used to bust his balls about how he'd never beat me on the swim, even though it was very close every time, and how we'd never have the opportunity to race each other again. My eyes teared up.

 Last night was Piotr's funeral. It was beautiful and powerfully sad. But afterward, many a Polish beer were had, the vodka flowed like water, and laughter and happier memories were shared. Did I mention there was a lot of vodka?

 So, now I'm in the pool... not feeling 100%, but Ocean Lifeguard Tough... right? I swam as fast as my body would allow this morning, and I waited to hear my time. "8:44," Chief Breck Ballou announced.

 Well Piotr, you finally beat me. And, I don't have a problem with that... even though you made me drink the vodka with you, like you'd done so many times before. I just wish you were here to enjoy your victory.

Whenever I saw you there was a huge smile on your face. That's is, unless you were being fake serious and calling me a trouble maker. You were the man who gave me my rec-aid position with the junior lifeguards. Between your sarcasm and Wade I thought I didn't get it! You cracked me up and kept me in check. Pompano Beach will never be the same to me without seeing you in the truck.

Pete, you will always have a special place in our heart as our son-in-law. We had special times together.

 For the entire time he had been in ocean lifesaving (over 20 years), Piotr had demonstrated an unusual dedication to his profession. For him, saving lives was not just a job, but an identity. He has become an ambassador and recruiter, dedicating a large amount of his off-duty time to helping others achieve their goals in ocean lifesaving. Piotrek Zatorski had been a lifeguard since he was 18 years old, first in his native Poland, then on the beaches of South Florida (Haulover Beach, Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, Miami Beach, Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale), amassing an encyclopedic level of knowledge of ocean lifesaving.

 Piotr had saved the lives of hundreds of people. He had taught, led, supervised, and guided many dozens of current ocean lifeguards and junior lifeguards. He was an awesome person, and friend to many. He will never be forgotten, and his impact on the peoples and communities he touched will be ongoing. We will miss you, Piotr, and will try to carry on in your name, for the love of lifesaving and the legacy you created. Rest in peace my friend.

My heartfelt condolences to the Zatorski family and friends. I met Peter surfing many years ago and we've been friends ever since. He has always taken the time to have a conversation with me and actually listened to every word. He had a very good heart and it showed. I'll miss him.
