December 16, 1929 – November 7, 2025
Vincent Ellis Haltaufderhyde, 95, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025. Born in New York City on December 16, 1929, Vincent spent his earliest years in Jamaica, a place that left a lasting imprint on his heart. He returned to New York at the age of 12 and carried with him a lifelong love for Jamaican culture— especially its food. Curry goat and rice and peas were amongst his favorites, and he preferred Jamaican dishes over anything else.
Vincent was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably during the Korean War from 1953 to 1954. After receiving his honorable discharge, he continued building a full and meaningful life. He attended Howard University, where he further developed the confidence, charm, and sharp mind that friends and family came to know so well.
In his early adult years, Vincent married Lucille with whom he had three sons— Eric, Michael and Charles. Though the marriage later ended, he was always there for Lucille. He remained deeply proud of his sons and loved them greatly throughout his life. His pride in them was unmistakable, and he cherished the families they grew to build. Vincent was present in their lives, offering support throughout the years as he did for many others.
In October 1964, Vincent married Verna. Their marriage lasted 56 years, until her passing in 2020. Together, they raised their one child Vynette, and built a warm home filled with humor, strong values, and the unmistakable aroma of Jamaican cooking. He retired to Florida in the 1990s, spending his later years enjoying the sunshine and living life to the fullest.
Vincent had a natural talent for fixing things and took pride in being a devoted do-it-yourselfer, especially around the house. He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds and would choose a good game over anything else on TV. When sports weren’t on, he could usually be found watching the news and offering his frank, outspoken opinions on whatever topic was at hand.
He will be remembered for his humor, his charming personality, his kindness, and his generosity to his family. Vincent had a strong presence — he knew exactly what he wanted and wasn’t afraid to say so. His family admired him for his honesty, his strength, and his unwavering love for them.
Vincent is survived by his youngest child Vynette; his grandchildren– Jana, Lavender, and Daniella; and his great-grandchildren– Shawn, Trinity, Isaac, Legend, Jonathan, Ethan and Elijah. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn.
He remained in good health for most of his life until the last two weeks of his life. Though his passing brings deep sadness, his family takes comfort in his long, rich life and the memories he leaves behind.
A funeral service honoring Vincent’s life will be held on November 22 at 11:30 a.m. at Kraeer Funeral Home, 200 W Copans Road, Pompano Beach, Florida. A visitation will take place prior to and after the service.
Vincent Ellis Haltaufderhyde lived 95 remarkable years, and his legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will continue through the generations he leaves behind.
