

Mark Austin Petteway, of the Cherry Creek Community, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2015 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born February 13, 1932 to Frank and Lilly Hewitt Petteway in Jacksonville, NC. He was attended Wake Forrest University and East Carolina University. He was a member of Cherry Creek Baptist Church and the Pontotoc American Legion Post 16.
Mark met his wife Betty Ann Clark while attending pilot training in Columbus, MS in 1953. After becoming a Radar Navigator in the Air Force, Mark retired as a Major, after 20 years of service. He flew over 2000 hours during his career and completed over 200 missions during the Vietnam War. He received many medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal, presented to him by President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1973 Mark and Betty moved their family back to Mississippi. Mark also worked for the Civil Air Patrol Headquarters in Montgomery, AL and with FEMA for 25 years.
Services will be at 2 PM Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc, with Minister Jay Stanley officiating; burial will follow in the Cherry Creek Cemetery with military honors.
Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife: Betty Clark Petteway of the Cherry Creek Community; his daughter: Elizabeth A. Black (Tom) of Charleston, SC; two sons: Mark E. Petteway and wife Patty of New Albany, MS and Charles F. Petteway of Tupelo, MS; three grandchildren: Eliza Black, Thomas Black and Laura Leigh Petteway ; 2 sisters: Joan Ross of Jacksonville, NC and Enid White of Winston Salem, NC and his caregiver: Judy Cocke.
