September 12, 1914 – October 23, 2017
Orris Fitts Staten, 103, passed to her heavenly home on October 23, 2017 at her earthly home. She was born in Pontotoc, MS, on September 12, 1914, to Joel P. Fitts and Sara Jane Castleberry Fitts. As a young woman, she taught in a one-room school in Pontotoc County. On October 24, 1936, Orris married her best friend, Joseph Alonzo Staten. They loved, laughed, worked and worshipped together until his passing in June of 1997. Since then, Orris continued to work in her gardens, both flower and vegetable, as well as cook for herself and her family when they visited. Her life was an example of faith to all who knew her. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church where she had served as church clerk, Sunday school teacher and participated in all church activities. There have been many pastors and preachers who have had the privilege of eating in her home. Missionaries were also welcomed in her home whenever a place to stay was needed. As much as Orris enjoyed trying new recipes and insisting everyone who passed through to sample, she enjoyed her faith even more. Orris loved talking about her Jesus and wanted everyone she met to know him.
Not only was she preceded in death by her parents, and husband, but also by her 6 brothers and 2 sisters; Raymond Fitts, Herman Fitts, Roland Fitts, Otis Fitts, Roy Fitts, Ulvie Fitts, Ollie Fitts Brown and Irene Fitts Hays. Along with these, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Nicholas Andrew Killough.
Survivors include: daughter, Dale Killough (Eddie), son, Keith Staten (Frances); grandchildren: Anthony Staten (Paula), Angela Coats, Anita Jones (Scott), Sarah Barton (Chris), Jessica Faulkner (Richard), Dr. Kevin Killough (Laura), Karen Reeves (Jeff); great grandchildren: Aron Barton, Hillary Staten, J.A. Staten, Nicole Staten, Tori McCammon (Stacy), Brandon Mc Cauley, Joseph Killough, Molly Killough, Alonzo Holliman, Maddy Grace Reeves, Colt Faulkner and Ryleigh Kait Faulkner; great-great-grandchildren: Chloe McCammon and Kira McCammon. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other near relatives and friends who express gratitude for her life.
Visitation will be at Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 6 to 9 PM and on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 2 to 3 PM. Services will be at 3 PM Saturday at Browning Funeral Home, with Rev. Harvey Sewell and Rev. Tommy Inmon officiating.
Pallbearers will be Eddie Killough, Anthony Staten, J.A. Staten, Aron Barton, Dr. Kevin Killough, and Joseph Killough.

Orris was my father's (Bill Parker) first cousin. They were born 12 days apart. They were very close growing up. She leaves a legacy and will be greatly missed. Nan Parker Hanks and Gail Parker Pafford.

Mammaw was the most gracious, humble, hard-working lady I have ever known. She seemed to be the cornerstone of the entire family and supported every member in any way she could. Her faith was her strongest virtue though. Any time family or friends were around, she would always say how she wanted us all to trust in our Saviour and look to Him for guidance. There is no doubt where her forever home is and I know she had the biggest smile on her beautiful face when she was greeted by "her Jesus". Mammaw will always be with us in our hearts but her presence will also be missed beyond any expression of words. We love you mammaw!
