Verna Sue Burgess, age 85, passed away Monday, August 16, 2010 at NMMC in Tupelo. She was born in Pontotoc County on December 5, 1924 to Sam and Ethel Bailey Clark. She was married to Malone Burgess and for many years, together they operated building supply companies in Pontotoc, for the past 26 years she owned and operated The County Village Grocery with her son Scott. She enjoyed cooking and in earlier years if you ever visited her home she wanted you to have something to eat. Her family was her life. She enjoyed the children, grand’s and great grand’s all being together. She was better known as “Mama Sue” to her family, store customers and her church family. She was a very dedicated member of the Church of Acts in Union County. She loved her family and church family and was loved by everyone who knew her. She was a kind and loving woman who thought of others before herself.
Services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with Rev. Charlie Gainey and Sister Carolyn Bradford officiating, burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Houlka. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her two sons: Gerald Burgess (Patti) of Tupelo, MS and Scott Burgess of Pontotoc, MS; her two daughters: Sandy Lyon Hawkins of New Albany, MS and Lisa Mathews (Steve) of Pontotoc, MS; her six grandchildren: Sonya Jamison, Secyme Lyon, Jessica Whitehead, Hannah Oswalt, Torri Oswalt and Eden Mathews; her four great grandchildren: Shayne Burchfield, Keli Wray, David Jamison and Corbin Whitehead; and two great great grandchildren: Nicholas Burchfield and Bradley Burchfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters: Lena Dowdy, Carolyn Byars and Mattie Quinn Todd; three brothers: D.H. Clark, James Clark, and Curt Clark; and a great grandchild; McKenzie Lyon.
Pallbearers will be: Sam Anderson, Jerry Holloway, Tom Hinkle, Art Phillips, Roger Bradford and Allen Lowery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday and from 12 to 2 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
