Virginia Raines Clayton, 89, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2018 at her residence in the Cherry Creek Community. She was born on May 22, 1929 to Robert and Mary Witt Raines in Union County. She graduated from Macedonia High School in 1948. Virginia married Travis Caron Clayton on March 13, 1949. She attended Cherry Creek Baptist Church.
She loved her family beyond words. She was very thankful that they lived next door to her. She was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. She loved any kind of flowers, especially roses. She planted all kinds of vegetables, but her specialty was tomatoes. Every year she would have over 200 plants. She loved canning. Virginia and her daughter, Bonnie loved to travel together on trips. Especially the Smoky Mountains.
Services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with Rev. Jeremiah McMillan and Rev. Mike Powell will officiate, burial will be in the Cherry Creek Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Clayton McCord of Ecru, MS; two grandsons, Brian Reeder McCord (Jackye) and Kevin Clayton McCord, both of Ecru, MS; three great-grandchildren, Kelly Lane McCord, Austin Reeder McCord and William Jack Clayton McCord; two sisters, Annie Barbara Nell Raines, of New Albany, MS and Imogene Thompson of TX; and her special caregiver, Eloise Vance of Houlka, MS.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six sisters, Louise Overby, Frances Abbott, Walt Wobble, Kitty Mae Pickens, Roberta Smith and Sara Ruth Raines; one brother, Louie Raines; and her son-in-law, Greg McCord.
Pallbearers will be Kevin McCord, Austin McCord, Benny Moorman, James Frank Bailey, Mike Reeder and Terry Pitts. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack McCord, Wayne Lessell, Jack Reeder, David Nolen, Rex Mooney, Chris McCord and Chris Morris.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM and on Wednesday from 10 to 11am at the funeral home.
