Johnna E. Lamonte, of Poplarville, Mississippi, peacefully passed away at her home on Friday, May 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Johnna was born on May 20, 1944, in Oakland, California, to her loving parents, the late John D. Starr and Mary V. Compton. Born into a military family, she spent her early years moving between duty stations across the United States. Though she lived a life on the move, Johnna was deeply anchored by her Native American heritage, carrying the spirit and traditions of the Southwest with her like a compass.
In 1979, Johnna brought that resilient spirit to Louisiana. Navigating those first years in the South as a young mother, she was defined by a fierce devotion to her children and an unwavering work ethic. It was during this chapter of new beginnings that she met her husband and soulmate, Sal. Together, they built a life of stability and love. Johnna also established a long career as an orthodontic assistant, a role she held with great pride for 25 years until her retirement.
The vibrant colors, values, and traditions of the Southwest were woven into every part of Johnna’s character and her home. An artist at heart, she had a passion for crafting and found great peace tending to her plants and flowerbeds. Above all, Johnna lived for her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Johnna was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Abbott; her sister, Mary Ann Quinn (Chris); and her brother, Tommy Starr.
Left to forever cherish her memory are her husband of 35 years, Sal Lamonte; her daughter, Janice Guidry (Daniel); her sons, Robert Abbott and Alexander “Alex” Chappell (Kristi); seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No public services are planned; Instead, her family will cherish her memory privately, finding comfort in the legacy of love and tradition she leaves behind.
