Affectionately known as Mimi by her children and grandchildren, her love and devotion to each of them was the glue that held the family together.
Monika was born in Munich, Germany on January 20, 1947, and she graduated from Munich High School. After coming to the United States, she was a military wife and lived all over the world. She later moved to Poplarville, Mississippi, and forevermore called it home. She attended Pearl River Community College and, in addition to raising a family of four children, worked several different jobs outside the home over the years. One thing everyone knew was that she was a great cook. She worked preparing and baking biscuits at the Wagon Wheel in Bay St. Louis and at Ward’s in Poplarville, and served breakfast at the Fairfield Inn Marriott in Hattiesburg. She also worked as a CNA at Pearl River County Hospital and Nursing Home, and retired as manager at Quick and Grice Gas in Poplarville after Hurricane Katrina.
She will always be remembered for having the kindest and most loving spirit, as someone who was quick to forgive, and as someone who saw the best in the people around her. Daily, she would pour into others kind words of encouragement and positivity. And, whenever she had an audience of family and friends, she was sure to entertain with her comical behavior and theatrics.
Monika is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Gisela Johnson; her brother, Johnny Johnson; and her nephew, Bryan Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Williams; her daughters, Christina (Paul) Miller and Cindy Sutfin; her sons, John (Linsey) Hatten and Michael (Ashley) Hatten; brother, James (Helena) Johnson; sister-in-law, Judy Dopson; niece, Fathom Irby Smith; 10 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
The family invites you to a Celebration of Life Service for Monika Williams that will be held at First Baptist Church (203 South Main Street, Poplarville, MS, 39470) on Friday, September 17, 2021, at 4:30 pm. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a scholarship in her name at Pearl River Community College to honor her. Checks may be sent to the PRCC Development Foundation 101 Highway 11 North Box 5389, Poplarville, Mississippi 39470.
