It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Emily Irene, on June 22, 2016, in Port Alberni, BC, at the age of 87, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. She leaves to mourn, her loving and devoted children, daughter Sherrie, of Port Alberni; son Brian (wife Doreen), of Nanaimo; brother Russ (wife Aileen) of Saltair; brother Jim (wife Tig) of Chemainus; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and many friends.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, ‘Lefty’ in 1993; parents, Colin and Olive Roe; sister Shirley; brother Ken; son-in-law Frank; and daughter-in-law Darlene.
Mom (known by everyone as ‘Bubs’) was born and mostly raised in Preeceville, Saskatchewan on Oct 12, 1928. Her father moved the family west to BC in 1942 for work, first setting in Saltair, and mom attended school at the Catholic convent in Ladysmith. Colin later moved the family to Chemainus. Mom worked for a time in the MacMillan Bloedel office, and the old Key Furniture store in Chemainus, then met the love of her life, Edward ‘Lefty’ Jackson, marrying him on June 30, 1949. Son Brian arrived in 1952, daughter Sherrie in 1955, and Mom stayed home to raise her family.
She returned to work for a few years in the late ‘60’s at Chemainus Credit Union, and she loved to knit and make quilts. She made hundreds of food donation packs for people affected by the closure of the old Chemainus sawmill, and knitted dozens and dozens of socks and slippers for the needy every year.
Dad and Mom sold their home, moving to Duncan in 1985, then to Nanaimo in 1988. After Dad passed in 1993, Mom returned to Chemainus, volunteering at several senior and help organizations there, and visiting with family and friends.
Her sweet, gentle loving manner, her good humour, and her loving devotion to her family and friends is the legacy she has left us.
She will be in our hearts and thoughts always.
There will be no service by Mom’s request, but a graveside service will be announced at a later date.
Flowers gratefully and respectfully declined, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia, or Fir Park Village Foundation in Port Alberni, BC.
