It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a wonderful lady, Em McDonald, a long-time resident of Port Alberni. Em was born on the family homestead in Antler Sask. to Pauline and George Newhouse. At the age of eighteen Em moved to Winnipeg to pursue a career in hair dressing but found that nursing was her real love. She moved to Vancouver and nursed in some of the larger hospitals in the city. In 1942 she met and married George McDonald of New Westminister and they moved to Port Alberni for George’s job as a millwright in the local mill. Em worked at the plywood plant for a time and then spent seventeen years with Bronson’s Hardware.
She is survived by her son Ken, at home, sister Margaret in Parksville, brother George in Milwaukee Wisconsin and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be no funeral but a graveside gathering at Greenwood Cemetery on Josephine St. on Wednesday October 3rd at 1:30 p.m. Stories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.chapelofmemories.ca. In lieu of flowers donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, 401-495 Dunsmuir St., Nanaimo, BC V9R 6B9 will be greatly accepted.
