

Fred Jarvis was born August 26, 1946 in Victoria B.C.. While growing up in Victoria he delivered the Times Colonist, played hockey and baseball and also bowled. Fred graduated from Mount View High in 1965 then attended UVic.
Fred moved to Port Alberni in September 1968. While living in Port Alberni the past 48 years; Fred was a teacher for 34 years, a member of the Alberni Valley Lions Club for 33 years, a member of The Salmon Festival Society for many years, he played Industrial Floor Hockey at Glenwood Center, he played Ice Hockey in the Industrial League for the Somass Flyers and he swam 40 lengths at Echo Pool each weekday morning. Fred had a phenomenal memory; he was a walking database for NHL and CFL statistics and for family events. Fred dozed at staff meetings; 8th Ave. staff provided him with special glasses that made him look wide awake.
Fred passed away May 14, 2016. He is survived by his wife Tanya, his sons Scott (Chelsea, Naqui, Jack, Fiona) and Brent (Genny/Genevieve), Christine Jarvis (Little), his sister Barbara Harvey and Barb’s sons Brad (Bonnie) and Dave (Antonia).

Fred’s health decline began in 2008 with bypass surgery; thank you Dr. Perchinski and the Cardiac Unit at Royal Jubilee Hospital. In 2010 Fred suffered a stroke and received wonderful care in the Rehabilitation Unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. In 2012 Fred was diagnosed with dementia. In 2014 Fred was cared for briefly at Mt. Tolmie Hospital then came back to Port Alberni to reside at Echo Village. Fred’s family is thankful for the exceptional care Fred received at the above hospitals and the Physio Department at West Coast General Hospital.
Thank you staff at Rehabilitation in Motion. Thank you Jane Cruttenden for helping Fred get back in the pool. Thank you Karen Richards (McAllister) for encouraging and helping Fred in Echo pool.
Thank you to the many Home Support Workers from Island Health who helped Fred start each day while he was at home. Thank you to Lisa and her amazing staff from Loving Hands Senior & Community Care who helped Fred.
Thank you Handi-Dart drivers for always being so cheerful, helpful and accommodating. Thank you to the staff at Fir Park Village where Fred attended the Day Program…he enjoyed it very much.
Fred’s family says “Thank You So Much” to the staff and volunteers working at Echo Village. We appreciated your respectfulness, your friendliness, your care, your humour, your activities, your wonderful meals, your help and your guidance. Thank you musicians that play/sing at Echo Village..
