Dr. Gerald R. Trees 1964 - 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce that Gerald passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at the age of 55 in Port Alberni, BC. Predeceased by his mother Carol Ronk. Survived by his loving wife of 33 years Julie Trees; children Alisha (Lance) Roberts, Katie (Cody Stevens) Trees and Sheldon (Taylor) Trees; grandchildren Blake and Liam; father Ron J. (Jan) Trees; brothers Timothy Trees, Craig (Lynette) Trees and Jake Trees. Gerald also leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many great friends.

Gerald was born in Ontario, Oregon, where he spent his childhood. Graduating from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1989, Gerald moved to Canada with his wife Julie the same year to pursue his career. Gerald was well known in the Alberni Valley as an optometrist at IRIS, as well as being an active member in the community. He was a minor hockey coach for many years and was involved in BMX racing all over Vancouver Island. Gerald was also a member of the Hockey Association and the Rotary Club. As a father, he was very involved and spent many years travelling with his children to hockey and lacrosse tournaments, as well as figure skating competitions. Gerald was a very proud grandfather to his two grandsons and adored spending quality time with them. Gerald's passions included motorcycles, hiking, exploring, travelling and spending as much time with his friends and family as possible.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the Alberni Athletic Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerald's memory may be made to the Gerald Trees Memorial Fund for the People of Peru Project.

Stories and condolences may be left for the family at www.chapelofmemories.ca/

To Gerald's family,
My deepest condolences to you. I was given the very sad news from Sara at Iris. I am a contact lens manufacturer and supplier, this is how Gerald and I met with him being a customer. Talking on the phone with him or at the BCAO conference every year our conversations would quickly turn from business to motorcycles, bmx or anything with two wheels. I am an avid motorcycle and dirt bike rider so knowing Gerald had same type of passions led to many long convo's which I always enjoyed and will miss. Again, my deepest condolences on your loss, he will always be a great man.
Regards, Trevor Kojima

Our deepest condolences to the Trees Family .
We were patient's of Dr Trees since 2011 when we moved to Port Alberni and loved to go to our appointments for not only the eye exams but to hear the great stories of his adventures on his motor cycle with all his pals and where they went. He was also very proud of his family and being a Grandfather.
We will really miss him a lot.

we were deeply saddened to hear about Gerald's passing and wish you Julie and your family love and support from family and friends. My favourite memory of Gerald was when he planned our route to Sturgis and back. I am known by my friends as "Wrong Way Grummett" and without Gerald's amazing ability to navigate the route, I would still be wandering around South Dakota!
He was a wonderful Light that went out way too soon.

Dear Julie and family,
I am so saddened to hear of Gerald’s passing, my thoughts are with you all.
As far as hockey goes, when Gerald coached “The Blues”, all the team member had an exceptional time with him behind the bench! The year the “Blues Mothers” taped all the kids sticks like the Canadian flag was a lot of fun. My son Bryan truly had a great experience and enjoyed hockey with Gerald on the ice!
As for eye exams, it was always a pleasure to catch up on each other’s family and talk about our travel experiences. Gerald’s love for his family was obvious.
It was very touching and meant a great deal to our family when Gerald gave a speech at Bryan’s celebration of life. ❤️
Hugs from Donna and John Douglas

Our sincerest condolences to the Trees family. My family were all clients and were always treated with respect and most often a lot of laughs. Due to our interest in hockey, Gerald and I would spent time at every visit discussing the game and/or the referees, as I was one! He opened his shop on two occasions on a Sunday for me because I had torn a contact lens in half and it was stuck in my eye. Rest In Peace my friend.
