Giovanna Anna Selva

March 8, 1934October 20, 2019

Gianna Selva passed away on Sunday, October 20th at Ty Watson House. She was born in Morsano al Tagliamento to Natale and Angela Paolatto on March 8th, 1934 and arrived in Port Alberni in April of 1953 becoming a proud Canadian. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Tony and her sister Anna.

She bore her illness with incredible strength, courage and dignity. We are very thankful to Ty Watson House for providing Mom and her family loving comfort and support at the time of her passing. She is survived by her sisters, Rina (Italy), Edda (Port Alberni), Gabriella (Ontario) and her brother Berto (Australia).

Her greatest joy in life was being Mom to her children Angela (Phil), Gio (Joely), Mark (Shari), Stephen (Nicole); Nonna to Jordan, Anthony (Marinka), Stephanie (Travis), Keagun, Wyatt, Abby and Cooper; Gia to Angela and Jaimey; Bisnonna to Lennox and Evie; Zia to Maria (Mark), Paolo (Mary), Barbara (Bruno), Tony (Norma) and their children and grandchildren plus many nieces, nephews and their families in Ontario, Italy and Australia.

She loved cooking and hockey which was a good thing as we often seemed to have a house full of hockey billets over the years. There was always good and plentiful food on her table and no visitor every left hungry. There are many people to thank who helped keep Mom comfortable in her own home during the past five years, especially Dr. Kerrie DeWitt, Anita and Colleen; Dr. Feyi and Dawn; her Community Health Workers; the people from Meals On Wheels; the Save-On-Foods Pharmacy Staff and the Life Labs Team.

Mom wouldn't want flowers or fuss. She would have liked you to feed the hungry, comfort the children and love your family. If you wish, donations to Ty Watson House would be appreciated and meaningful.

There will be no formal service as per Mom's request. A family gathering and Inurnment will take place at a later date.

"La bellezza della morte, e la presenza. Presenza insprimibile degli esseri amati, sorridente ai nostri occhi in lacrime. I morti sono gli invisibili, ma non gli assenti" Victor Hugo

  • A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date

Dear Angela, Gianni, Mark and Stephan (and families), so sorry to hear of Gia Gianna’s passing. I have so many fond memories of her. She always made me feel special and nicknamed me “Roxy”. She welcomed me and Lucy (my dog) whenever we popped in for a visit when in the neighbourhood and always had food to offer. My earliest memory of her was when I stayed with you guys when mom was sick in the hospital for a long time, and when my mom recovered and came to pick me up, I clung on to Gia Gianna’s leg as if my mom was a stranger. My last memory of her was a visit before I moved out of town, and of course offered me cookies, one of my favourites (I don’t know the name of them but they were crunchy, dusted with icing sugar)
I always thought she was so beautiful, I used to tell her that she looked like Sophia Loren, and I still think so xx. Rest in Peace Gia Gianna

Our dear Gianna has passed away. We want to give our condoleances To Gianni, Stephen, Angela and Marc for the loss of their dear mother, but a consolation is that she no longer needs to suffer and that she has passed away in the presence of her dear children! I will continue to remember her as a sweet aunt and I think of the beautiful time I had with her and zio Tony. I wish you all lot of strength in this difficult time!

My condolences to the family. I remember when I was a child she left to Canada.
She gave us years later a very warm welcome in Port Alberni when we visited her.
Since then I called my husband Toscanini, the name she gave him.

RIP zia Gianna.

Zia Gianna,
Kind, loving, caring, wanting to make people happy and feel welcome in her home.
It was so good to see you this summer, allready very ill.
No complaining, strong and in a way sort of accepting.
Just saying I am old.....
You'll be in my mind, with many good memories of all the times I came over in Port Alberni.
Stringth and love to all my cousins and kids with the loss of their mom and Nonna.

Dear Angela, Gianni, Mark, Stephen and families. We were honoured and blessed to be able to spend the last few days with our Zia Gianna. We have many wonderful memories of going up and down the street between our two homes during our childhoods. Zia's home was our home. Vivid memories of Zia in her polka dot halter top working in her beloved garden, her perfectly manicured nails, Adidas shorts, burning "wubber" in the driveway, her outdoor Christmas tree, her style, her grace, her words of wisdom and encouragement but most of all how she loved us all unconditionally like her own. "We had a wonderful Aunt, One who never really grew old, Her smile was made of sunshine, And her heart was solid gold." We hope that you find peace and comfort knowing that she will be in our hearts forever. Much love from Maria, Barb, Paolo & Tony.
