With great love and deep sadness, the family of Hubert Bernard Witte announces his passing on February 19, 2026. Hubert left this world surrounded by those he cherished most—sharing stories, laughter, and the steady love that defined his life.
Born on April 11, 1932, on site 23‑37‑19‑2 near Englefeld, Saskatchewan, Hubert was the first child of Joseph and Hermine Witte. He grew up in a family of five children: Elenore (who passed at age two), Lillian (deceased; Keith), Otto (Betty), and Marie (Roger). Hubert often recalled his early years with great fondness—especially the simple joy of riding to school in a horse and buggy, and the wonderful homemade lunches his mother prepared. He held his mom in the highest regard.
As a young man, Hubert travelled to Port Alberni in search of work with a close group of lifelong friends—a decision that would change his life forever. It was there he met the love of his life, Norma Milligan. They married in 1956 and moved to Watson, Saskatchewan, where they farmed together until 1971. Hubert and Norma later returned to Port Alberni, purchased the River Bend Store, and raised their family on River Road.
Hard‑working, steady, and reliable, Hubert built a career that reflected his character. He owned and operated a taxi service before becoming a well‑known and respected city bus driver, a role he took great pride in and held until retirement.
Hubert and Norma built a large and loving family. He is survived by their five children, Perry (Barb), Ferne (Dan), Jesse (Marina), Shaun (Sheila), Brayden (Bernice); grandchildren Lindsay (Jim), Courtnay (Dave), Chelsea, Brandee, Tyrel (Kyla), Michaela (Austin), Julia, Jordyn, Jayden, Trinity, and Quinlan; and great-grandchildren Maryn, Grady, Heidi, Taneal, and Barrett.
Hubert is also lovingly remembered by his dear friend Marie, with whom he found happiness in his later years.
He was predeceased by his wife Norma, his parents, Joseph and Hermine; his sisters Elenore and Lillian; and his daughter‑in‑law Tammy.
To many, Hubert was simply Grandpa—a title he wore with joy. He never missed a game, concert, recital, or school event; if a grandchild was involved, he was there—smiling, cheering, and bursting with pride. He cherished family gatherings, remembered every birthday, and loved a good game of crib. A skilled and strategic player, he was still winning matches right up to his final days.
Hubert leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, humour, and unwavering love. Though he will be profoundly missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that his life was full, joyful, and lived in the constant company of those he loved most.
A Memorial Mass will be announced at a future date.
