Predeceased by wife Beverley, daughter Shannon and sister Lois.
Mel is survived by children Debra (Paul), John and Lisa; grandchildren Michael, Nathan and Dana; great grandchildren Samantha, Brittney, Lennon, Robel and Rose; as well as extended family.
Born and raised in the Alberni Valley, Mel finished school and became a commercial fisherman. He built a boat with his father called the Szygy and worked on it until Bev asked him to stay closer to home. He became a longshoreman/ foreman and worked up and down the BC Coast for over 40 years before retiring in 1995.
When not working Mel loved to be outdoors. He spent many hours with his family hunting, lake fishing,he enjoyed camping with the family, and traveling always making sure the family had a vacation together at least once a year. He and Beverley traveled to Hawaii numerous times as well as to Arizona in his later years. When he was at home, he would go to his secret mushroom spots to pick chanterelles.
There will be no service at this time.
