It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother at the age of 87. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Hamagishi; parents Zennojo and Kiyoko Shigematsu; brothers Toshi, Shuji, Yosh, Hiroshi; and sister Sue. She will be greatly missed by her children: Karl, Maureen (Will), Leah (Mark), Denise (Terry), and Greg; grandchildren: Kyle, Ciara, Lamica (Chris), Alicia, Reiko, Tani (Joe), Brieanna (Jon), Sean, Joel, and great-grandchildren: Caden, Jaxon and Kade. She is survived by her sister Marge (George); brother Glenn; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mom was born at Victoria Hospital February 20, 1932 in Vancouver, BC. She lived in McLean’s Mill to the age of 10 years old. Her family was relocated to an internment camp in Greenwood, BC during World War II. She met our dad during this time and was married on April 14, 1952. They returned to Port Alberni in 1961 and lived in the valley until her passing.
She graduated from high school in Greenwood, BC and attended Dress Design School in Vancouver, BC. She was involved in many charitable organizations. She worked as a tailor at Woodward’s in Port Alberni and taught dress design drafting at night school. She returned back to school later in life to obtain her Early Childhood Educator Diploma and worked as an Early Childhood Supervisor. She remained a talented and passionate dress designer so made another change and opened up a dress design, tailoring and alteration shop until she retired.
The family is thankful for the care and support mom received over the years from Dr. White and Melissa.
