October 12, 2012
Tom passed on October 12, 2012 in Port Angeles of age related causes, with family and close friend by his side. He was born in Baker, Oregon on August 23, 1924 to Charlie Lockhart and Mary (Rowe) Lockhart.
Tom lived his early years in logging camps in Eastern Oregon. He went to elementary school in Baker and Port Angeles. Tom graduated from Roosevelt High School in Port Angeles, where he played on several sports teams. He played football in the first game ever played at the Civic Field.
Tom and Fay A. (Lussenhop) Lockhart were married in Port Angeles on July 24, 1947. Fay proceeded in death.
Tom joined the U.S. Navy during World War Two and served in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Watts. Near the end of the war, his ship was part of the famous “Picket Line” off Okinawa.
Before and after his Navy service, Tom worked at the Port Angeles Crown Zellerbach pulp mill. He retired from his work there in 1986. He was a millwright for the pulp mill. Tom was a proud member and supporter of the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers (AWPPW) union. There is a location at the mill called “Knuckle Alley,” a testament to that.
In his younger years, Tom enjoyed hunting and fishing and taught his children what he knew. He made an effort to attend activities in which his family participated.
In his later years he enjoyed spending time visiting friends at the Senior Center, especially playing cribbage, both of which he did right up to his passing. He liked meeting the ROMEOS for a meal out.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Fay; and parents, Charlie and Mary.
He is survived by sons, Pat (Cheryl) of Port Orchard, Wash., Chuck (Pam) of Port Angeles, Wash.; daughter, Laurie Roderick of San Carlos, Calif.; long-time friend and companion Laverne Jones; brother, Ted (Diane) of Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
