November 11, 1933- October 5, 2012
Today in Heaven there is a glorious Smith Family Reunion as they join with Jesus in welcoming one of their own!
Davelene, the daughter of Frederick and Maude Smith, was born on November 11, 1933 in Prospect, AL. She was the 10th of 12 children, 8 daughters and 4 sons. Davelene was raised in Prospect where she and her sister became known as the Smith Sisters, they would continue to sing together during her family visits throughout her lifetime. Davelene enjoyed singing with her family and in her church. She also would play the piano during the family music sessions. Music continued to be a major part of her life and there was never a time when she was not surrounded by it. She often sang and played with various groups, most recently with the Senior Singers in Port Angeles, WA.
Davelene enjoyed playing basketball while she was in high school and played for both Carbon Hill and Prospect as the captain of her team winning a trophy in her state tournament. She graduated from Carbon Hill High School in 1951, shortly after her graduation she and her parents moved to Port Angeles, WA where they joined her sisters Janelle and Laura Lou and their families. After moving, she and her sister Janelle attended Bates Business College before her family moved back to AL, without her, in July 1952.
Not long after moving to Port Angeles she met and married Richard Powless on June 14, 1952. They had 5 children and continued to reside in Port Angeles throughout their marriage, with frequent visits to her family home in AL.
Davelene worked for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services for over 25 years. Most of that time was spent as an office assistant in the Port Angeles Office. Davelene was a member of the Port Angeles Free Methodist Church where she served on the worship team, playing piano and singing through most of her adult life. She served in many other capacities including Sunday school teacher, youth leader, CYC worker, secretary, to name only a few. She enjoyed serving her church and her community.
Davelene had the capacity to live life deeply and the ability to love most everyone she met. Her desire to leave the world a better place than what she found it was evident everywhere she went, she always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met. She was a blessing to all who touched her life; she was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
