Mildred Maria Alder

Mildred Maria Alder, 93, passed away on August 27, 2011, at Prairie Springs Assisted Living in Sequim, Washington. She was born July 28, 1918, in Aberdeen, Washington to Johan and Johanna Hill.

As an infant, her parents, homesick for the old country, moved the family back to Sweden and then Kasko, Finland.

Mildred graduated from Kasko Swedish High School and returned to the United States at the age of 17.

On a vacation to Grayland, Washington to visit her brother Albert serving in the US Coast Guard, she was introduced to his good friend and Coast Guard member, John Alder. Mom and Dad said it was love at first sight for them on this first date over a cup of coffee at the Tea Cup Cafe.

Mom and Dad made their first home in Aberdeen as Dad continued to serve in the Coast Guard. They later moved to Crescent City, California and then Port Angeles, Washington.

Mom was the center of her family, a wonderful mom and homemaker. She took great pleasure in gardening, canning, knitting, cooking and creating cherished memories for her children and grandson.

She and Dad loved to go fishing and went every time they could on their boat, the Karlin.

She is preceded in death by her husband John; daughter Karin; a sister Irene; and brother Albert.

Mildred is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Ronald (Lien) Alder of Sequim, Washington, Ray (Martha) Alder of Port Angeles, Washington; and daughter and son-in-law Linda (Dan) McClelland of Hansville, Washington; and grandson, Nicholas Alder, serving in the US Air Force.

She is also survived by her friends and staff at Prairie Springs Assisted Living whom she considered her second family and home.

A private burial will be held at Mt. Angeles Memorial Park. She will be laid to rest next to her late husband and daughter. Arrangements made by Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mom’s name to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, 504 E. 8th St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.
