

Barbara Ellen Ek, 75, of North Port, Fla., passed away peacefully the afternoon of June 3, 2013. She was born in Bessemer, PA, on March 13, 1938, and lived most of her life there before moving to Florida in 1986. She graduated from Mt. Jackson High School in 1956 and eventually retired from The New York Times Company in 2003 after 15 years of service. Barbara was a devoted mother to her three sons and had a good sense of humor. She enjoyed going for walks, singing and writing poems. She had a poodle named Benjamin Pierre for 14 years and currently had a 5 year old Yorkshire Terrier named Rocky that she loved dearly. While living in Bessemer, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Middletown, Ohio. She sang in the choir and was a Sunday school teacher. She will be greatly missed by her sons Kevin R. Ferlan and Kenneth A. Ferlan of North Port and Lorin K. Ferlan of Bessemer. In addition she is survived by her sisters Mrs. Elsie E. Jones of Granville, NY and Mrs. Frida E. Kanengeiser of Cleveland, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mrs. Irma F. Jackson. Private services were held.
