Carol Ann Hartwig, 79, passed away peacefully at her home in Port Charlotte, Florida, on May 18, 2025. Born on February 24, 1946, in New York City, she was raised in Hackensack, New Jersey, before making her home in Charlotte County, Florida, where she resided for over 40 years.
A savvy and determined businesswoman, Carol owned and operated several Mobil gas stations throughout the Charlotte County community alongside her husband, Daniel “Scoop” Hartwig. Together, they built a reputation for hard work, integrity, and dedication to their customers, employees, and neighbors. Remarkably, two of the gas stations they operated are still in existence today, a lasting tribute to their legacy and work ethic.
Carol was known for her razor-sharp wit and infectious sense of humor, which made her a joy to be around and endeared her to all who knew her. Her heart was as big as her personality—generous, compassionate, and deeply committed to helping others. Her dedication to those she loved was steadfast and true. She also had a deep love of travel and explored destinations all over the world, embracing adventure and new experiences wherever she went.
Along with her family, Carol volunteered her time and energy to causes close to her heart, including the Florida Special Olympics. Whether through business or service, she was deeply invested in her community.
Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Daniel “Scoop” Hartwig, and her (step)daughter, Debra Vargo. She is survived by her children William Hartwig, Stacey O'Neill, and Danielle Hartwig, and her (step)daughter Dawn Janick.
She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Daniel Vargo, Justin Janick, Tommy O'Neill, and Sarah Prather, and a cherished great-grandmother to Violet Vargo. Her family was her greatest joy, and her love for them was unwavering.
A visitation and celebration of Carol’s life will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Homes, 635 E. Marion Avenue, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Carol will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her strength, humor, generosity, and steadfast devotion to those she loved.
