Cecelia Mathilda Brown was born in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica on October 18, 1929 to Joseph Grant and Audrey Burton. Her mother passed away when she was a toddler, so she was raised by her grandparents Caleb and Ann Burton.
She attended Santa Cruz Elementary School; but left before graduating and went to work to help support her family.
Her first employment was in a dry goods store in Santa Cruz. Leaving that employment, she travelled to the city to be with her aunt, and while there, got a job with the Ministry of Education, working as a messenger.
Cecelia met and married Mordecai Roy Brown. In 1962 she migrated to the Unitied States where she worked with a family in New York as a helper. Her husband joined her then. Cecelia got a better job working as a nurse’s aide at the Metropolitan Geriatric Jewish Center for almost two decades, and was a dedicated and devoted employee.
Cecelia and her husband moved to Florida in 1994 and unfortunately he passed away five years later. Her church membership was transferred from Faith Brooklyn Seventh-Day Adventist Church in New York, to the Punta Gorda Seventh-Day Adventist church in Florida where she was an active member serving as deaconess, chorister, greeter, Sabbath School Secretary and anything else that she was appointed to do.
She was known for her famous apple cake, ambrosia pudding and Hominy Corn which she made for friends and family.
Cecelia worked at Walmart on King’s Highway for twelve and a half years, and everyone knew when she was there because she sang through her shift to the delight of employees and shoppers.
After retiring from Walmart, her time was spent with church needs, visits to shut-ins, family and friends until failing health prevented her from doing so.
Her last days were spent at Solaris Nursing Home where she passed away peacefully on December 19, 2022.
Cecelia loved the lord, and was loved by everyone. In all her interactions one could tell that Christ was the center of her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband Mordecai Roy Brown, sisters, Una James, Sylvia Grant and brother Cyril Grant.
Is survived by her daughter Elva Wilmot, Son-in-Law Eagonn Wilmot, grandchildren Millicent Wilmot Facey, Marjean Wilmot, step daughter, Rashida Brown, Warren Wilmot, Grandson-in-Law, Chester Robert Facey, niece Nuklyn Cornwall, nephews, cousins, seven great-grandchildren, and close friends and church family.
