Edward (Ed) Doucette, 91, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on October 25, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Gertha; his son, Edward, of Maryland; and his grandson, Joseph, of Virginia.
He is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Dodson, and her husband, Floyd, of Virginia; his granddaughter, Sandra, and her husband, Willard, of Virginia; and five great-grandchildren: Monroe, Samuel, Adam, LucyMae, and Jayla.
Ed was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and was drafted into the United States Army in 1956. He proudly and honorably served his country until November 1984. During his distinguished military career, he received several honors and commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and the Army Commendation Medal.
In 1985, Ed and Gertha moved to Port Charlotte, Florida, to begin their retirement. He often fondly referred to that time as "The Summer of '85." Ed wholeheartedly embraced the Florida lifestyle, spending much of his time enjoying his backyard pool and the beautiful beaches. An avid runner and bicyclist, he also had a great love for tennis. He played for several years on a local Port Charlotte doubles tennis team, enjoying both the competition and camaraderie.
Ed will be remembered by his family and friends as a true gentleman—polite, kind, honorable, and always gracious. He lived a life of service, devotion, and quiet dignity. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he leaves behind will be cherished always.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. A committal service with military honors will take place afterward at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, where Ed will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Gertha.
