
Florida, on December 3, 2009. Born in Shanghai, China, to the late Ernest Henry & Mary nee Herzberg Staber, he was the youngest of three children. The family lived in China for several years while his father worked for Standard Oil. After extensive travel across Asia and Europe, he landed via ocean liner in the United States. After arrival, he attended the Fesseden School in West Newton, MA. Where he acknowledged that he "grew up", went on to the Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH., and later graduated from Roger Ludlow High School in Fairfield, CT. He attended University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT. He served for two years in the US Navy during World War II on several submarines, attained the naval rating of Seaman, First Class, and attended QuarterMaster School in Sampson, NY. Subsequent to his service in the Navy, Ed founded and operated Edward J. Staber Private Investigators, based in Monroe, CT., until he retired. In retirement, he moved to Punta Gorda, FL where he has lived for the past 21 years. Ed had a keen interest in fishing, golf, and reading, and was an active member of the American Legion Post 110. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Ernest Staber Wilmington, NC and sister Mary Keusch, Hilton Head, SC.
He is survived by his loving wife Kathryn Punta Gorda, FL, daughter, Elizabeth Staber and her partner Susan Price Barrington, NH, sons John Staber Oxford, CT and William Staber and his wife Mayling Eaves Haddon Heights, NJ. Grandchildren: Jamie and Michelle Staber Evans, CO, Ian and Cassandra Staber Oxford, CT and Amelia and Lydia Staber Littleton, MA. Great grandchildren: Haven and Willan Evans, CO, and Mikayla Naugatuck, CT.
A Celebration of Life Service in Ed's honor will be later held for his
family and friends. Ed maintained a fondness for "the place where I grew up"; Fesseden School. He also took particular pleasure in witnessing the benefits to local youth
accorded from scholarships provided by the Seagrape Gallery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either of Ed's favored charities:
