Mrs. Elveen “Elle” Jowers Phillips, 86, went home to be with the Lord on September 21, 2020 at Arcadia Hospice House near her home in Port Charlotte, Florida, due to complications suffered from an ischemic stroke. She was born in Lake City (Florence County), South Carolina on May 27, 1934, the eldest of six children of the late Roy Betts Jowers and Maude Thigpen Jowers.
After graduating in 1952 from Slater-Marietta High School in Slater, South Carolina, Elveen went to work at Carolina Supply where, through carpooling to work, she met and married the love of her life, the late Douglas Edward "Pete" Phillips, in 1953. She was a good wife to her husband and a wonderful mother and grandmother. Over the years, Elveen enjoyed working outside the home as a secretary, real estate broker, and sales agent. Throughout her married life, the family lived up and down the Eastern United States in South and North Carolina, Maine, up-state New York, Florida, and eventually Pete and Elle settled in Port Charlotte, Florida in 1988. She worked for the Charlotte County Public Works Department as a secretary and retired after twelve years of service.
Elveen had a loving, gentle personality, and a strong Christian faith. For many years, she and her husband were active in the New Day Christian Church of Port Charlotte. Elveen enjoyed baking macaroni and cheese casseroles as well as coconut pies for family, friends, and church socials. She loved the excitement and especially the camaraderie of bowling with her husband and friends in couples’ leagues and winning several trophies along the way.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sonya (John) Anderson, and Shari (Randall) Harvey; four grandsons, Eric (Katie) Anderson, Jason Anderson, Bryan Harvey, and Aaron Harvey; her brothers Franklin (Mary Ann) Jowers and Allen (Patsy) Jowers; her sisters-in-law Sara Jones, Wanda Jowers, and Kathleen Jowers; and, several cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, brothers Roy “Rick” Jowers Jr. and Phillip “Phil” Jowers, and sister Mamie Frances Jowers.
If you would like to remember Elveen, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made in her memory to Tidewell Hospice Foundation, https://tidewellfoundation.org/donate/, your local place of worship, or the American Stroke Association, https://www.stroke.org/.
