
J. Harold Townes, 84, of Punta Gorda, FL, formerly of Greenville, SC died March 7, 2011 following a brief illness. He served in the US Navy aboard a mine sweeper during WWII. Following the service, he attended and graduated from Clemson College, in the school of Architecture. He was re-called by the Navy during the Korean War, was commissioned and served aboard a heavy cruiser. He worked as an Architect and owned his firm, Townes Associates Architects for over 45 years in Greenville, SC. He was a life member of the Sertoma International and served as president of Sertoma Foundation Int'l. He and his wife have spent many years traveling the US, Canada and Mexico in an Airstream trailer and for twenty years, have settled in SW Florida in Punta Gorda.
He is survived by his wife Bootsy N. Townes and two daughters, Mandy Townes Stewart of Greenville, SC and Caroline Townes Rogers of Pickens, SC; five grandchildren, Allison Joseph, Katherine Joseph, James Stewart, Gracie Hunt and Townes Rogers; a brother, Bob Townes and sister, Miriam Hunter, both of Greenville, SC. He was predeceased by his daughter, Lenora Townes Wilk of St Mary's, GA in 2004.
