John Edward Smaltz, Jr. of Englewood, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on November 13, 2016 at the age of 79 with his wife and his daughters at his bedside. John is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Margaret Ann Smaltz (Nee Sullivan), his brother Joseph Carl Smaltz, his three daughters, Kathleen Marquart, Margaret Smaltz D’Antonio and Theresa Ann Smaltz.
He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward Smaltz and Eleanor “Crissie” Crist and his two sons, John Joseph Smaltz and Michael Lloyd Smaltz.
John was born on February 13, 1937 during the worst blizzard on record in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from South Catholic HS, joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War in the 25th Fighter Intercept Division. John spent 33 years in the Aerospace Division at GE as an Aerospace Engineer and Manager. After retiring, he began a new career in commercial real estate.
A Celebration of his life will be held for the family and friends in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
