He was born May 27, 1923, in Granite City, Illinois. He worked for the National Enameling & Stamping Co. and for General Steel Casting Co. both of Granite City. He was captured in Italy during WWII by the Germans while serving in the Army. After several years as a prisioner of war, he was repatriated,due to his poor health, in January 1945. He became a U.S. Postal employee in 1945 in Granite City and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Tarpon Springs, Florida in 1978, where he had "dispensed humor along with postage"for many years.
He moved to New Port Richey, Florida, in 1958, where he and his wife, Ruth Elmore Bauer owned the Allamanda Motel. They moved to Englewood in 1986. He was an active member of the Elks in Florida and Illinois.
Survivors include his daughter, Leslie C. (jr) Bauer-Berger, Terry Berger, son-in-law, and his granddaughter, Blair Berger. Also, he is survived by both of his siblings, Katherine McMillan of Peekskill, N.Y. And Conrad Bauer of Edwardsville, IL. Also, his sister-in-law, Mildred Sherman of Granite City, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife and one granddaughter, Emma A. Berger.
The body was cremated and a celebration of life will be held in the Summer in Granite City, IL. Friends and family will be notified. Any memorials may be made to their respective favorite charities.
