
Mary was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on April 11, 1920, to Douglas and Gertrude Tilson and grew up in both Knoxville and Johnson City where she attended cosmetology school. During WWII, she worked in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where she also learned to fly airplanes. She married Clifford C. Barnard in June 1952.
Mary moved to Florida in 1970 with her family, settling in Boca Grande for 16 years. Following the death of her husband, she relocated to Rotonda, where she pursued her love of crafts and listening to gospel music. She remained in this area for the next 24 years. In 2010, Mary moved to Heritage Healthcare in Venice, Florida.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; her son, Edward Barnard; and her daughter, Marjorie Wyrick.
She is survived by her son, Nick Barnard of Port Charlotte, and her daughter, Debra Spivey and husband Randy of Bradenton. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Amber Gassman, Todd Wyrick, Jonathan Dhein, Amy McNamara, Rebecca Austerman, Jeffrey Spivey, Nikki Barnard, Katie Waggoner, Sarah Barnard, Joseph Spivey, Jordan Barnard, and Whitney Barnard, as well as 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood on Friday November 4 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace.
