

Melanie Patricia "Mel" Scott, 53, of Sarasota, FL passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Mel was born in Venice, FL and attended Venice Elementary, Junior High, and High schools. She was a graduate of the Sarasota County Technical School Police Academy and worked at the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office for 28 years, attaining the rank of Sergeant in the Civil Department.
She enjoyed nature and particularly loved the butterfly. She also liked crosswords, puzzles, bowling, and believed in "supporting the businesses of Florida's Native Americans" and "helping the local economies" of Biloxi and Tunica, Mississippi; Reno, Nevada, and Atlantic City, New Jersey with her friends Judy & Faye.
She leaves behind a daughter, Niki Shew, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; her mother, Dorothy of Sarasota; her brothers, Larry, of Brooksville & Berry of Port Charlotte; her sister Holly Gothner of Nokomis; her grandson, Michael Santoni; 4 nieces and 4 nephews; and a brother-in-law (Dick) and sister-in-law (Debra). She also leaves behind her closest friends: Judy Johnston, Faye Streeter, George & Kathy Lukas, Dave & Linda Brewer, Bill & Linda Sullivan, John Kost, Dave Gustafson, Jim Buettner, Jay Spenla, Roger & Janice Lovern, Russ Marquiss, and Renee Marquiss. Mel is predeceased by her father Hollis R. "Scotty" Scott, Jr. and her sister Christine M. Scott.
Mel crossed paths with so many people, and left her footprint in the hearts of a lucky few.
