Known as Fred to friends and family, he was born in Los Angeles, California; however, he lived for most of his life in the U.S. Northeast.
He attended Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, R.I., before joining the U.S. Navy, where he served as part of the support unit of the Fifth Amphibious Corps of the U.S. Fleet Marine Force. He received a Purple Heart Medal for heroism in Iwo Jima, Japan from February 19 to 28, 1945.
Fred lived in Rhode Island for about 50 years and was employed by the U.S. Post Office for about 30 of those years, retiring as a supervisor in Cranston, Rhode Island. He and his wife, Dorothy, then moved to their summer home near Old Silver Beach on Cape Cod in Falmouth, Massachusetts. During his years on the Cape, he was an avid gardener and golfer. He also worked at the Pocasset Golf Club for about 14 years. In 2007, Fred and Dorothy became full-time residents of Port Charlotte, Fla.
He was the son of the late Cosimo Miale and late Elizabeth Russo. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Marie Miale, of Port Charlotte, Fla. and two children, Frederick V. Miale Jr. of Larkspur, Colo. and Elisa Miale Wood of Barboursville, Va. His four grandchildren are Cara Lin Miale Goman of Charlottesville, Va.; Gwendolyn Marie Miale of Lafayette, Colo.; Alynda Noel Wood of Atlanta, Ga; and Spencer Gates Wood of Barboursville, Va. He also is survived by three siblings: Grace Platter of Cranston, R.I.; William Miale of San Diego, Calif.; and Dr. Walter Myers of New Hartford, Conn.
Fred was deeply devoted to his wife, Dorothy, who he met in Rhode Island at age 18. They were married in 1947. He was close to his children and grandchildren, who adored his humor and readiness to play with them when they were small, and appreciated his stories, ruminations and favorite words-of-wisdom as they matured.
