

Raymond G. Melendez, age 97, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Born on March 15, 1929, in Saticoy, California, to Refugio and Isabella Melendez, Ray lived a life defined by faith, service, hard work, education, and devotion to family.
Ray proudly served his country in the United States Army for more than 20 years, retiring with the rank of First Sergeant. Throughout his distinguished military career, he exemplified leadership, dedication, and honor. His service reflected a deep commitment to his fellow soldiers and to the nation he loved.
A lifelong learner, Ray earned a bachelor's degree and was fluent in multiple languages, skills that reflected his curiosity, intelligence, and appreciation for diverse cultures and people.
Upon retiring from the military, Ray moved to Kentucky to help his wife care for her parents, demonstrating the same sense of duty and selflessness that had guided him throughout his military career. He then spent more than 20 years working in the coal mines of Kentucky, where he was respected for his strong work ethic, perseverance, and commitment to providing for his family.
Ray and his beloved wife, Patsy, shared many passions and adventures throughout their life together. They were avid golfers who enjoyed competing in tournaments and competitions, earning numerous victories and accolades over the years. They also loved dancing and became well known for their skill on the dance floor, winning several awards and drawing admiration from spectators who would often stop and watch whenever they danced.
A devoted Catholic, Ray's faith guided him throughout his life and provided strength, purpose, and comfort to him and those around him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patsy Marine Melendez, who passed away on January 28, 2017, and by his parents, Refugio and Isabella Melendez.
He is survived by his children: his eldest son, Tony Melendez of Greenville, Kentucky; his son, Danny Melendez; and his loving daughter, Tammy Melendez of Central City, Kentucky.
Ray will be remembered as a devoted father, faithful husband, proud veteran, dedicated worker, and cherished friend whose wisdom, strength, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family touched the lives of many.
Ray will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, where he will join his beloved wife in eternal rest. A funeral service with full military honors will be held there. The date and time of the service will be announced when arrangements are finalized.
Ray's legacy of faith, service, perseverance, love, and commitment to family will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
May he rest in the peace of God's eternal embrace.
