Raymond Albert Van Gundy Sr., 93 years old, passed peacefully in his sleep on January 29th 2023. He was born on September 6th, 1929, in Etna Green, Indiana. He grew up in Michigan City, Indiana, and moved with his family to Punta Gorda in 1946.
He enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War as a Sargeant in the AMEDDS. Upon returning from the war, he worked as a carpenter for Mc Cloughan & Sechrist Builders , which was owned by his father and brother. He was known for his excellent workmanship, and he took pride in every job he did. Towards the end of his career, he became one of the best master carpenters in Charlotte County.
He met his future wife, Wealthia Stephens, in Punta Gorda, and they married in 1953. They raised 4 children and, after retirement, lived in Maggie Valley, NC, and Punta Gorda equally for many years before eventually remaining in Punta Gorda permanently.
He enjoyed Bluegrass music and festivals, watching old western movies, auto racing, antique cars, collecting replica model cars, playing with his dog, and reading the funny paper every Sunday morning. He especially loved being with family, loved his country, and spent time with the Lord at church. He was always kind to everyone and never had a bad word to say. Was a joker, always made you laugh, and had a crooked little smile that warmed your heart. He will be truly missed by his family.
He leaves behind his loving wife Wealthia Van Gundy, children: Raymond Van Gundy Jr. (Sue), Donald Van Gundy (Gina), Joan Keeney (Rick), Sarah Van Gundy Fotros (Ray). Five grandchildren: Matthew Keeney (Lisa), Michael Keeney (Melissa), Amy Van Gundy, Brian Van Gundy, Kori Van Gundy And 9 great grandchildren.
