Robert Mayo Johnson, 90 passed away peacefully on December 14, 2021 after a lengthy battle with dementia. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Barbara Jean (Betts, Welch) Johnson in June of 2020 and his sister, Barbara Johnson McGuinness.
He was born in Waltham MA to Adeline Dorothy (Dow) and Wilbur Theron Johnson, and was raised in Providence RI where he attended Moses Brown School, Brown University and then on to St. Michael’s College in VT. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was always proud of having been a flight navigator in the Navy’s first carrier-capable strategic jet-powered bomber, the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior. In his later years he enjoyed telling captivating stories of his time in the service.
After his marriage to Barbara, they relocated to California where he worked for Southern California Edison, then to Port Charlotte FL after retirement where they enjoyed many happy years together.
He was a man of many interests and passions including reading, crosswords, sailing, and following his hometown teams the Red Sox and Patriots. He was most fond of his large, extended family and the annual summer trips north to spend time with everyone and would start looking forward to the coming year’s trip soon after the current one had ended.
He leaves behind daughters Lynda Homer of Haverhill MA and Cynthia (Paul) Curley of Sterling MA, a son Mark (Patricia McKeon) of Holden MA, grandchildren Jessica (Chris) Smith of Danvers MA, Andrew (Billie Anne) Stone of Haverhill MA, Eva of Worcester MA, Julia of Austin TX, great-grandchildren William and Tess Stone, a niece Barbara (Mitch) Wood of Suwannee GA, nephews Michael (Linda) McGuinness of Elk Grove CA, Peter (Ginger) McGuiness of Sacramento CA, Patrick McGuiness of Warwick RI, as well as step-children David (Patricia) Welch of Ballwin MO, Stephen (Donna) Welch of Attleboro MA, William (Haesoon) Welch of Austin TX, Richard (Carol) Welch of Hauppauge NY, Sheriann (Mark) Scuzzarella of Franklin MA, and Carlton (Lisa) Welch of Mt.
