He moved to the North Port area 26 years ago from Chicago, Illinois.
He was a member of the Elks Venice / Nokomis Lodge, AmVets of North Port and he delivered Meals on Wheels for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Kay Mertes of North Port; sons, Robert Phyllis Mertes of Sebring, Florida and Donald Donna Mertes of St. Anne, Illinois; his daughter, Lynn Marie Joseph Michelau of Racine, Wisconsin; his step children, Sean Christy Lutz of Vancover, Washington and Jerilee Doyle of Port Charlotte, Florida; his sisters, Patsy Maude, Marion Hitzeman and Ceil Martin; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Vincent was predeceased by his first wife Evelyn.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Lemon Bay Funeral Home Englewood Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood with burial to follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood.
