We gather here today to celebrate the life and legacy of a man who walked in faith and love, William "Bill" McBrien, who was called home to the Lord on April 25th, 2024. Born in the bustling borough of Queens, New York, on May 18th, 1936, Bill's journey began with a spirit destined to touch the lives of many.
Bill's early years in New York were marked by his remarkable prowess on the football field, where he shone as a defensive tackle for Northport High School, earning all-scholastic honors for his athletic talents. But Bill's strength was not confined to the gridiron; it extended to every facet of his life, including his service to our nation. A proud veteran of the Army, Bill carried his love for his country and fellow servicemen and women throughout his life, advocating tirelessly for the rights and benefits of the staff at his beloved veterans nursing home.
After his time in the service, Bill channeled his passion and dedication into his work as a business owner, founding a landscaping architect company that would stand as a testament to his vision and hard work. He was a man who planted seeds not only in the earth but also in the hearts of those he met, nurturing growth and beauty in both.
He was a cherished father to Jodi, married to Craig Lucker, and Jeffrey McBrien. A grandfather to Megan, Matthew, Jenna, and Tyler. Bill was also a beloved brother to Frank McBrien and honored the memory of his late brother, Thomas McBrien.
In his community, Bill was a beacon of friendliness and faith. A born-again Christian, he lived his life as a testament to the love of his Lord and Savior. His spirited nature was a source of inspiration, as he gave rousing speeches on occasions that stirred the soul—be it Independence Day, Veterans Day, or Thanksgiving. Bill's words had the power to uplift and unite, reminding us all of the blessings we share as a nation and as a people.
Bill's passion for music knew no bounds. From rock to gospel or country, his love for all genres created a symphony of joy that resonated through the hallways of the nursing home, often leading the staff in impromptu dance parties that brought smiles and laughter to all.
As a New York Jets fan, Bill's spirit and enthusiasm were as unwavering as his faith. Even in the face of defeat, he stood by his team, a true testament to his character—steadfast, hopeful, and ever-encouraging.
As we bid farewell to our dear Bill, let us carry forward the lessons he taught us through his life. Let us be spirited in our endeavors, friendly in our interactions, and faith-filled in our walk with God. Bill McBrien was a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left a legacy of joy and compassion that will continue to blossom in the lives he touched.
As we commend Bill to the arms of our Heavenly Father, we take solace in the knowledge that he is now at peace in the eternal gardens of the Lord, tending to the heavenly landscapes with the same love and care he showed on this earth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Douglas T Jacobson State Veterans' Nursing Home.
