Born June McGhie on June 20, 1943, in Vancouver, British Columbia, June was the first child of John and Agnes McGhie and later became a loving big sister to her brother, Ron. She grew up in Vancouver, spending much of her youth on St. Catherine’s Street, where the roots of her lifelong values of family and hard work were firmly planted.
June attended McKenzie Elementary School and later John Oliver Secondary School, where she met the love of her life, Rick Hughes. High school sweethearts, they married on August 15, 1964, beginning 61 beautiful years together as husband and wife. They built their life and family in Vancouver before eventually settling in Port Coquitlam.
June and Rick raised four children: Michael (fiancé Linda), Daniel (girlfriend Celine), Rob (wife Letasha), and Lisa (husband Shane). June was a devoted and proud mother whose life revolved around caring for her family and creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
She was a cherished grandmother to twelve grandchildren—Christine, Emily, Karson, Nicole, Kevin, Rebecca, Julia, Liam, Abigail, Phoenix, Declan, and Amelia—each of whom held a special place in her heart. June was endlessly proud of her children and grandchildren, and her greatest joy was time spent with them.
Family dinners were a cornerstone of June’s life—always homemade, always shared, and always on time. Her kitchen was the heart of the home, where roasts, chili, potato salad, and her famous lasagna brought family and friends together.
Creative and endlessly talented, June found joy and peace in crafting. She crocheted, knitted, sewed, and created countless handmade treasures for others—baby blankets, quilts, clothing, and whimsical gifts.
Adventurous and energetic, June embraced life fully. From water skiing at 65 to river rafting at 70, she approached life with enthusiasm and courage.
June is lovingly remembered by her husband Rick; her children and grandchildren; her brother Ron; her late sister-in-law Liz; her niece Heather and nephew David; and many extended family members and dear friends.
