Marie (Hall) Coulter died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 106, on October 12 after a long and amazing life. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Trish (Don), Vern (Linda) and Nick (Maggy), grandchildren Trevor (Shahrzad), Robin (Esther), Ian (Julie), Maureen, Tasha (Tymen), Meghan (Doug), Liam (Mel), Owen (Emaan), and Given (Cassia), great grandchildren, Danica, Lydia, Kieran, Declan, Claire, Leo, Mia, Avery, Shaya, Rahdeen, Rowan and Brynne.
Marie was born in Rochdale, England on July 19, 1918. She met and married Vic Coulter during WWII. They emigrated to Canada in 1956 with three children, settled and remained in Port Coquitlam their entire lives.
She worked as a secretary, first at a local medical clinic, then many years at two elementary schools.
Ever since first arriving in Port Coquitlam a big part of Marie’s life was the Esther group of the United Church, and she contributed countless hours supporting “Thrift” and donating scores of her knitted and crocheted toys, children’s sweaters and slippers for the frequent bazaars that were held. She also hosted many meetings of the Esthers Friendship group at her home.
She loved to bake and is very much missed for her homemade bread and soups. (The latter, Vic said, was one reason he married her!)
Many of Marie’s early holidays were spent camping throughout B.C. with Vic and she always had great breakfasts ready for the family. Later, Marie and Vic then switched their time to their newly built cabin on Lummi Island where she enjoyed hosting the many family members and friends who would join them. She travelled with Vic to Japan (with the Pocomo rugby club) and with friends or family to England, Ireland, New York, Hawaii, Florida, New Zealand. They even took a Panama Canal cruise for good measure! After Vic’s death Marie came on holiday with the family to Penticton every summer until her 101st birthday.
The family would like to thank all those who took the time to visit Mum at home, and at the Elim Village Care facility in Surrey where she moved in March of this year. There she received outstanding care from the dedicated staff. A special thank you to the folks from Trinity United Church of Port Coquitlam for their steadfast friendship through the years.
