May 18, 1929 – December 25, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sophie Kwitkowski on December 25th, 2022 at the Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody, BC.
Born in Olha, Manitoba, much of her early life was spent helping her parents, Bill and Josephine Zenchyshyn, along with her 9 siblings on the family farm. In 1950, she married the love of her life, John, and they built a beautiful life together, raising three wonderful children. In 1968, they made their permanent move to Port Coquitlam, B.C. A wife, mother, and devout Catholic, Sophie also worked at the Army & Navy and K-Mart, from where she retired. Sophie spent her retirement enjoying visits with her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, bowling, bingo, knitting and crocheting, daily phone calls with her sister and her granddaughter, and taking care of her lovebird companion of 20 years, Peaches. We will fondly remember her caring heart and generous nature, the stories of growing up on the farm “back home”, watching Y&R, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy together with a cup of tea, and endless hours spent gardening and birdwatching together.
Sophie was predeceased by her husband John in 1991, her sons David in 2003 and Robert in 2005, her sisters Jean, Anne, Elsie, and Hilda, and brothers Peter, Mike, and John. Sophie is remembered and missed by her daughter Donna (Steve), sister Sonya, brother Ron, granddaughter Christine (Joey), grandson Kevin (Becky), four great-grandchildren, Sophie, Kaitlyn, Daniel, and Abbey, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Sophie to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Hope For Freedom Society, or The Wildlife Rescue Association of BC.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 19th at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Assumption, 3141 Shaughnessy Street, Port Coquitlam, BC. At 12:30 pm, Sophie will be laid to rest alongside her husband, and close to her sons, at Port Coquitlam Cemetery, 4150 Oxford Street, Port Coquitlam, BC, with a reception to follow at First Memorial Burkeview Chapel, 1340 Dominion Avenue, Port Coquitlam, BC.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialportcoquitlam.com for the Kwitkowski family.
