Daniel "Dano" Bruce Abbey, 72, passed away after a long battle with Lung Cancer on Thursday, August 20, 2026. He was born on November 29, 1953, in Pontiac, Michigan, Daniel later made his home in Binghamton, New York.
Daniel was a graduate of Chenango Valley High School and attended SUNY Broome. He carried forward the steady determination of a lifelong learner, meeting each new season of life with an open mind and a sincere respect for the people around him.
A United States Navy Veteran, Daniel brought that same sense of duty into his working life. He served as Manager of the Mens Clothing Dept. at Boscov's Department Store, and he was known as a good, faithful worker who chose roles that allowed him to engage with the public—something he did with ease, warmth, and genuine interest. He also worked at Dimmock Hill Golf Course and lived in California for many years, where he started a golf business. Later, he was a proud employee of the Tioga Downs Casino & Hotel Gift Shop. Even after his diagnosis, Daniel continued to work for 10 years, a reflection of his steadfast spirit and the quiet strength with which he met life.
Daniel loved spending time with his family, and his presence among them was marked by an easygoing joy. He had a gift for friendship—truly everybody’s friend—quick to laugh, happy-go-lucky in the best sense, and able to bring lightness into ordinary moments.
He also took great pleasure in personal style and in the thrill of the road. Daniel loved fashion, and he was a great lover of cars, especially enjoying the experience of purchasing new cars.
Daniel was preceded in death by his mother, Corrine Abbey. He is survived by his father Gerald Gene Abbey, Sr., his sister, Sandra Jean Abbey Sofsky (Robert); his brother, Gerald Gene Abbey, Jr. (AnnMarie); his nieces, Maria Abbey, Alexandra Abbey, Laura & Dean Panagiotopoulos, Christina Abbey,; his forever friends, Marcia Champion Abbey and Shannon Monroney; and his grand nieces & nephews, Saaniah, Kaelona, Grahm, Shay, Aseer & Khairi. Many aunts, uncles & cousins. We would like to send a special thank you to Brian who's always open armed to all of his family and especially to Dan on this last trip.
Daniel will be remembered with respect and affection—for his faithful work, his friendly nature, and the laughter he so freely shared.
The family will receive friends at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson on Saturday, September 5, 2026 from 1-2pm with a Memorial Service to follow at 2pm.
