

Binghamton: Mrs. Dorothy R. Hughes, of Binghamton, matriarch of the Hughes family, flew like a dove into the arms of her Lord on Sunday, October 21, 2012. Mrs. Hughes was born into this life on September 13, 1914 to the late Floyd and Grace Pell. She is survived by her three daughters, Dorothy Furgeson of Binghamton, Harriett Heath of Endicott, April and David Thomas of Charlotte, NC; two sons, Harry and Sheree' Hughes of Wappingers Falls and Larry Hughes, of Charlotte, NC; 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; her sister, Jessie Terry of Binghamton; her sister-in-law, Mary Hughes of Albany; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Harry R. Hughes; five of her sons and three of her daughters. Mrs. Hughes was an active member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church for over 50 years, and gave of herself unselfishly and tirelessly to their many clubs and boards, such as: The Ministry of Kindness and The W.H.O.M. Society. Her interests included family, gardening, sewing, reading and baking. She devoted much of her time and energy to caring for her family and was a perfect example of a good homemaker and a good Christian woman. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church, 203 Oak St., Binghamton with Rev. Freeman Y. Perry officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Hughes' name may be made to Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church Building Fund, 203 Oak St., Binghamton, NY 13905.
