June 20, 1937 – October 1, 2026
Gladys Irene Ford, 89, known to all as Irene, of United Methodist Homes' Front Street campus, passed away on October 1, 2026, in Binghamton, New York. She was born on June 20, 1937, in Bainbridge, New York, the daughter of Wesley S. and Nettie June (Hare) Fowler.
Irene was, above all, a wonderful mother. She worked tirelessly to provide for her family, including many years at Acme Markets, and she did it with such grace that her children never went without, and never knew how hard she was working to make that so. Her strength and selflessness were the foundation of their lives. Her love reached well beyond her own family. For years she opened her home as a foster parent, giving children in need the same care and warmth she gave her own.
Those who knew Irene will remember her warmth. She never had an unkind word to say about anyone, and she was always ready with a smile. She could strike up a conversation with anyone she met, and more often than not, a stranger walked away feeling like a friend. She truly had a heart of gold.
After years of hard work, Irene thoroughly enjoyed her retirement, first wintering in the sunshine of Mulberry, Florida, and eventually making it her home full time. In 2017, she returned to New York, moving into assisted living at United Methodist Homes' Front Street campus.
She is survived by her son, John D. Andrews Jr., and his wife, Jill; her daughter, Rene Karinen; her grandchildren, John (Katie), Jordyn (Chris), Hannah, and Jewell; and her great-granddaughter, Natalie. She was predeceased by her husbands, John D. Andrews, William Lee, and Don Ford.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of United Methodist Homes' Front Street campus for the many years of wonderful care and kindness they gave Irene.
There will be no public service. The family will gather privately to celebrate her life.
